Ashishveda and your Daily Ayurvedic Routine

Ashishveda Ayurveda is an everlasting science, something that has no end. It not only helps you to understand the value of life, but it also provides underlying direction that encourages one to live life in the most harmonious way possible.

Ashishveda’s Ayurveda practice teaches ancient wisdom that is meant to be used every day; it’s not something you look for only when you need it. It’s very practical and accessible because its foundation is based on purely the maintenance of good health and the prevention of disease.  It isn’t a beauty treatment although you will feel amazing from the inside out, it is a lifestyle change and you won’t look back.

At Ashishveda Ayurveda the definition of health is so elaborate, so whole, and so all-inclusive that it is present in the food you choose to eat, in the colours you choose to wear, and how you arrange your environment, and in everything else that is part of your life either internally or externally;  

One of the best and most effective ways to practice Ayurveda is through your lifestyle and diet.  This is the easiest place to start too and the basis of Ashishveda Ayurveda which consists of the 5 elements ether, air, fire, water and earth; they guide and work together with your constitution (body type). The collaboration of these 5 elements is set in each fragment of this universe. The molecular structure of the food we eat contains these 5 elements, just as the human body is made up of them. If we learn to understand what our constitution is based on also understand what are the tastes and subtle qualities of the food we eat, while also understanding the cycle of day when eating, what season we are in and also even what part of the world we are in; we will see that all these things come together and influence us in how we feel. We need to synchronise our internal rhythm with the rhythm of nature to create harmony and therefore balance our body and mind health.

Knowing your Dosha

Ayurveda is based on the principles of three doshas. Doshas are the energies that make up every individual, which perform different physiological functions in the body:

The 3 Dosha types:

1. Vata Dosha — Energy that controls bodily functions associated with motion, including blood circulation, breathing, blinking, and your heartbeat.

  • In – There is creativity and vitality.
  • Out – Can produce fear and anxiety.

2. Pitta Dosha — Energy that controls the body’s metabolic systems, including digestion, absorption, nutrition, and your body’s temperature.

  • In – Leads to contentment and intelligence.
  • Out-: Can cause ulcers and anger.

3. Kapha Dosha — Energy that controls growth in the body. It supplies water to all body parts, moisturizes the skin, and maintains the immune system.

  • In – Expressed as love and forgiveness.
  • Out -: Can lead to insecurity and envy.

Three Ayurvedic Rules for Coffee Drinkers

In Ayurvedic practice, the three doshas – the primary life energies that make up body and mind – must be balanced for true health and harmony. Of the many things that aggravate or ease doshas, the foods we eat and beverages we drink can have profound effects. Many of us feel like we can’t even function without a daily cup of coffee, but it is important to know whether coffee will aid or hinder your health and mental clarity. Here are three rules for coffee drinkers from Ayurveda:

  • Have a cuppa if you’re kapha -The kapha dosha, associated with earthy solidity, responds well to coffee which has a mild diuretic effect. Signs of excess kapha include fluid retention and feeling low on motivation or foggy-headed. A good cup of quality coffee can help even the most lethargic kapha find the energy boost necessary to stay
  • Be moderate or avoid coffee if pitta or vata dominate, it is important to be more careful with your coffee intake than a primarily kapha person needs to be if your pitta or vata doshas tend towards excess. Vata types often suffer from digestive problems such as constipation. The diuretic effect of coffee reduces fluid in the body more, and thus can aggravate this health complaint. As for pitta, the heating effect of coffee and its bitterness can cause more pitta to build up and can worsen problems such as acid reflux.

 

  • Balance coffee intake with an Ayurvedic morning routine even if you can’t resist having an early morning cup of coffee, you can at least adopt an Ayurvedic morning routine that will compensate for any minor adverse effects. Drink a cup of hot water with the juice of one lemon each morning if possible. This alkalizes the body and helps to counteract the acidifying effect of coffee. Also eat a grounding breakfast that will counteract the tendency of coffee to make your mind race.

 

Coffee can be hard to resist, especially if you work in an office culture where a cup of stimulating coffee is always nearby. Know your dosha and use the three Ayurvedic rules for coffee drinkers and you should be able to keep enjoying this invigorating beverage.

Recognising that we too as human beings are a huge part of nature, Ayurveda describes three essential energies that control our inner and outer surroundings: movement, conversion, and our make-up. Known as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth), these primary forces are responsible for the appearance of our mind and body

If Vata is dominant in our system, we tend to be thin, light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable. If Pitta predominates in our nature, we tend to be intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented and we have a strong appetite for life. When Kapha prevails, we tend to be easy-going, methodical, and nurturing. Although each of us has all three forces, most people have one or two elements that predominate.

For each element, there is a balanced and imbalanced expression. For example When Vata is balanced, a person is lively and creative, but when there is too much movement in the system, a person tends to experience anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, constipation, and difficulty focusing.

When Pitta is functioning in a balanced manner, a person is warm, friendly, disciplined, a good leader, and a good speaker. When Pitta is out of balance, a person tends to be compulsive and irritable and may suffer from indigestion or an inflammatory condition.

When Kapha is balanced, a person is sweet, supportive, and stable but when Kapha is out of balance, a person may experience sluggishness, weight gain, and sinus congestion.

An important objetive of Ayurveda is to identify a person’s ideal state of balance, determine where they are out of balance, and offer interventions using diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, and meditation to re-establish balance.
