Knowing your Dosha

Ayurveda is based on the principles of three doshas. Doshas are the energies that make up every individual, which perform different physiological functions in the body:

The 3 Dosha types:

1. Vata Dosha — Energy that controls bodily functions associated with motion, including blood circulation, breathing, blinking, and your heartbeat.

  • In – There is creativity and vitality.
  • Out – Can produce fear and anxiety.

2. Pitta Dosha — Energy that controls the body’s metabolic systems, including digestion, absorption, nutrition, and your body’s temperature.

  • In – Leads to contentment and intelligence.
  • Out-: Can cause ulcers and anger.

3. Kapha Dosha — Energy that controls growth in the body. It supplies water to all body parts, moisturizes the skin, and maintains the immune system.

  • In – Expressed as love and forgiveness.
  • Out -: Can lead to insecurity and envy.

Boost your Chi using Ghee

Ghee – pure, clarified butter that is an essential ingredient of Indian cuisine – is loved for its nutty taste and luxurious, melting texture. Yet it has more benefits than its taste and culinary versatility. It also has multiple health benefits, and is one of the few natural foods that can be consumed by people of all dosha types irrespective of their predominant type. In order to get the most out of ghee, it is important to either make your own or purchase ghee that is made from the purest ingredients.

The health benefits of ghee.

Ghee has been used for hundreds of years in Indian cooking. Its numerous health benefits are widely known amongst Ayurvedic practitioners. Chi, the life force that fills and nourishes the body and mind, is affected by imbalances in the doshas, and when this life force is weakest illness may develop. Eating ghee in moderation, as part of a balanced, Ayurvedic diet, helps to keep your chi stronger.

Health benefits of ghee include:

• Enhanced digestion
• Better food absorption
• Deep cellular detoxification
• Improved immune function
• Better skin condition

These are only some of ghee’s beneficial properties.

How do I get/make ghee?

Ghee is butter from which all the milk protein has been removed, leaving only pure fat with no impurities. As such, it is important to use high quality dairy products to start with. To make ghee, unsalted butter is melted at low temperatures and boiled until all water has evaporated nd milk solids have separated out. The fat is strained and kept and the milk solids are discarded.

While it is possible to make high quality ghee at home, it is all too easy to scorch the melted butter accidentally. This will make your ghee unusable and can be an expensive mistake. Working with hot ghee is also a hazard for burns. If you prefer not to make ghee yourself, you can purchase pure ghee that offers the full range of health benefits from expert Ayurveda practitioner, Dr Ashish Paul. Dr Paul uses only the finest ingredients to ensure optimal health benefits.

The benefits of Hasta Abhyanga – Ayurvedic hand massage

Your hands are constantly busy, whether typing out work correspondence, texting friends and family or doing arts and crafts. With all the work that your hands do day to day, they could be one of the first parts of your body to show symptoms of painful ailments such as arthritis. Yet in Ayurvedic tradition, Hasta Abhyanga (special Indian hand massage) has long been used to alleviate these pains.  Here are some of the benefits of hand-massages:

Hand massages greatly reduce stress

When you are feeling pressured at work or going through difficult changes in your personal life, stress can grow unmanageable. Hasta Abhyanga is particularly calming and can help you reduce stress when you most need to.

Hand massage reduces muscle tension

When you hold tension in one part of your body, it often creates tension in other parts. Painful muscles in your hands can also cause unpleasant cramping. Ayurvedic hand massage, however, relaxes the muscles in the hand deeply. Pair this benefit with the stress reduction massage includes, and Ayurvedic hand massage becomes a powerful yet simple treatment for attaining healthy balance.

Hasta Abhyanga assists with better breathing

So much of what are our bodies do happens subconsciously. Yet Hasta Abhyanga or hand massage can help to make breathing more conscious, as you become relaxed and aware of your breathing. You can have Ayurvedic hand massage performed using soothing medicated oils or without.

You can use hand massage therapies from Ayurvedic tradition in tandem with other Ayurvedic treatments. Pair hand massage sessions with Shiroabhyanga (head massage) to relieve even more stress, improve circulation and ward off headaches. Between Shiroabhyanga and Hasta Abhhyanga you can find total relaxation.

Beat the common cold with immune-boosting Ayurvedic support

In the heart of winter opportunistic colds and infections create painful sinuses and discomfort. Ayurvedic medicine provides natural ways to keep the common cold away. Aryuvedic cold remedies have been used for thousands of years and provide all-natural alternatives to filling your body with caffeine and other unhealthy stimulants. When you feel a sore throat or blocked sinuses coming on, try these natural remedies.

A warming, natural tea

The foods you eat have a potent effect on the three life energies or doshas – kapha, vata and pitta. The watery kapha dosha is associated with dampness and health complaints such as excessive mucous. Try drinking a warm mug of hot water steeped with natural ginger root, a slice of fresh lemon and a dash of turmeric each morning. The spiciness that is a property of pitta counteracts the excess of kapha that is associated with colds. Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibiotic, and ginger has excellent antibacterial properties.

A sinus-clearing warm oil treatment

Nasya is an Ayurvedic treatment that entails the application of natural, warm medicated oil to the nasal passage. This helps to lubricate the sinuses and keep them from getting dry. If you have been using a saline spray for sinusitis, it is especially important to lubricate your sinuses again to avoid irritation and discomfort

Natural Ayurvedic health supplements

Warming, naturally antibacterial foods are effective as a preventative measure against colds and flu. But a little extra support is often helpful. Natural nasal drops containing extracts of healing herbs and plants can be taken to alleviate congestion, while anti-inflammatory powders such as Trikatu powder can be taken with honey to ease discomfort. If you are unsure what natural Ayurvedic treatment to take, consult with your practitioner for advice.

Colds are a niggling cause of discomfort and can worsen if left untreated. So stay healthy and boost your immune system naturally with Ayurveda during the colder winter months.  Contact me for more details.
